Why We Built This Method
Most curriculum reviews are based primarily on personal experience.
While those experiences can be incredibly helpful, they can also lead to completely different conclusions about the same curriculum.
At The Thoughtful Homeschool, we wanted to create a more consistent way to evaluate curriculum.
Instead of asking whether we personally like a curriculum, we first seek to understand what it was designed to do, how it teaches, and which learners it is most likely to support well.
That learner-first perspective guides every review we publish.
Section Two
Our Philosophy
Before evaluating whether a curriculum is a good fit, we first seek to understand the curriculum itself.
Every curriculum is created with a particular educational philosophy, teaching style, and intended learner in mind.
Rather than asking:
“Do we like this curriculum?”
we ask questions like:
- What was this curriculum designed to accomplish?
- How does it actually teach?
- Which learners is it most likely to support well?
- Under what circumstances might another curriculum be a better fit?
Understanding always comes before evaluation.

Our Review Process
Five steps, applied the same way to every curriculum we publish.

Research
We gather information from curriculum publishers whenever possible—teacher guides, student samples, scope and sequence documents, placement information, videos, and other primary materials. When appropriate, we also consider firsthand experience with the curriculum.

Understand
Before assigning any ratings, we identify the curriculum's design intent, teaching philosophy, lesson structure, and learning progression. This lets us evaluate the curriculum according to what it was actually designed to accomplish.

Evaluate
We evaluate the curriculum using The Thoughtful Homeschool methodology. Rather than asking whether a curriculum is universally good or bad, we consider how different learners are likely to experience it.

Compare
Every curriculum is evaluated using the same methodology, making it easier for parents to compare programs consistently and understand the meaningful differences between them.

Publish
Each review includes learner fit, parent experience, curriculum characteristics, strengths, limitations, and practical guidance to help parents make thoughtful curriculum decisions.

Whenever possible, our conclusions are grounded in curriculum documentation, published materials, and observable instructional characteristics rather than personal preference alone.

Every curriculum is evaluated using the same structured methodology so families can make meaningful comparisons across reviews.

We explain the reasoning behind our conclusions so parents can understand not only our recommendations, but why we reached them.
Fit Over Rankings
We do not believe there is one universally “best” curriculum. Different learners thrive with different approaches, teaching styles, and learning environments.
Ongoing Improvement
Curriculum evolves over time. As new editions are released or meaningful changes occur, reviews may be updated to reflect the most current information available.
